Reading Tutor in Sebastopol

All tutoring sessions are led by me, Sam Burke, a certified K–6 Reading Specialist with over 10 years of experience and specialized training in the Orton-Gillingham approach. Using a structured, systematic method, I support elementary students with dyslexia and reading difficulties as they build strong decoding, spelling and writing skills. I’m passionate about helping children become confident, fluent readers while nurturing a lifelong love of reading.

Services

Your child’s initial assessment, usually 20-40 minutes is FREE. The assessment is free so we can make sure that the services I offer are a good fit for your child.

Weekly tutoring sessions are individualized for your child in a systematic and structured way, aligned with the Science of Reading.

Tutoring sessions are 45  minutes each. I work with students 1-3 times a week depending on their needs.

Assessments & Progress Reporting

Students are assessed across key literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, decoding, multisyllabic word reading, fluency, and spelling. These assessments help identify each student’s strengths and areas for growth. Families receive a monthly progress report outlining learning goals, skill development, and next steps.

Structured Session Routines

Each tutoring session follows a predictable, structured routine. Students review previously learned skills and are introduced to new concepts through explicit, multi-sensory instruction tailored to their learning style.

Targeted Decodable Books

Students practice newly taught phonics skills using decodable texts that align with each lesson and are carefully selected to meet individual learning goals.

Vocabulary Development

Every lesson includes engaging vocabulary instruction to help students connect meaning to text and confidently apply new words in their reading and writing.

High-Frequency & Irregular Words

Students receive targeted practice with high-frequency words (commonly used words in text) and irregular words (words that do not follow typical spelling patterns). Mastery of these words supports smoother, more confident reading and writing.

Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is the ability to understand and make meaning from text and is the primary goal of reading. It requires the integration of multiple skills, including word recognition (decoding), vocabulary, background knowledge, and critical thinking. Explicit, systematic instruction in foundational reading skills supports fluent reading, allowing students to focus their cognitive energy on understanding and learning from text.

This program is ideal for K-3rd grade students who need support with letter sounds, blending, decoding, fluency, comprehension, and confidence while reading grade-level text.

Assessments & Progress Reporting

Students are assessed in key literacy areas, including decoding, multisyllabic word reading, fluency, and reading comprehension. I use a combination of assessments tailored for upper elementary students:

  • An Orton-Gillingham–based phonics screener to ensure students have a solid phonics foundation
  • The Read Naturally Live digital program to measure and track fluency and comprehension

Student goals and progress are monitored digitally through Read Naturally Live, allowing me to efficiently adjust instruction and support growth. Families receive a monthly progress report summarizing learning goals, skill development, and next steps.

Targeted Passages & Predictable Routine

Each tutoring session follows a predictable, structured routine, helping students feel confident and focused. During each session, students:

  • Read an individually selected passage with me
  • Practice the passage and targeted vocabulary using digital scaffolding
  • Reread the passage with me to build fluency
  • Review their written comprehension responses with me and receive guided feedback

All passages are selected based on each student’s individual reading goals.

Vocabulary Development

Every lesson includes explicit vocabulary instruction to help students connect meaning to text and confidently use new words in their reading and writing.

Reading Comprehension & Written Responses

Reading comprehension (the ability to understand and make meaning from text) is the primary goal of reading. As students become more fluent readers, they are able to devote more cognitive energy to comprehension and deeper learning.

Using the Read Naturally Live program, students practice recalling, restating, and reflecting on what they read. I review comprehension responses with each student, providing support to strengthen written expression, clarify thinking, and celebrate growth as both readers and writers.

Why I use Read Naturally Live

After working with many upper elementary students over the years and trying a variety of reading programs, I’ve found Read Naturally Live to be the most motivating and efficient tool for helping 4th–6th graders become stronger, more confident readers.

This strategic use of technology allows me to effectively support a small group of students while maintaining highly individualized instruction.

  • Groups include no more than three students
  • Each student works on their own targeted passage
  • Students read aloud individually to me, not to the group
  • While I conference with one student, others work independently on vocabulary, comprehension or rereading their passage using headphones

This structure provides the benefits of a small-group setting while ensuring every student receives personalized attention.

This program is ideal for 4th–6th grade students who need support with fluency, comprehension, and confidence while reading grade-level text.
